Sandbag Distribution Map

I supported the design and development of an interactive sandbag distribution map for the Valley Water website, replacing a static PDF with a dynamic, user-friendly tool to improve accessibility and usability.

  • Transformed a flat map into an interactive version that allows users to quickly find free sandbag pickup sites.

  • Integrated directions, exact locations, city details, availability status (filled/unfilled), and security camera presence for better decision-making.

  • Implemented a hover/click feature to display additional details, with a key icon marking security cameras for quick recognition.

  • Enabled zoom functionality to improve readability, addressing issues with the small text and images in the original PDF.

  • Designed the map to be easily updatable by IT, eliminating the need for constant PDF revisions.

This interactive solution enhanced navigation, accessibility, and efficiency, ensuring users could quickly find nearby sandbag sites while streamlining updates for administrators.

PDF TO INTERACTIVE MAP

While working on the PDF, I focused on ensuring the map was ADA-compliant by incorporating both texture and color to enhance clarity and distinguish elements effectively. For the interactive map, I simplified the sandbag icon to improve legibility and align with the map’s overall style. We also added features that allow users to maximize the map size, switch between different base/terrain views, and search for distribution sites based on their current location or a manually entered address. For example, users can switch to a satellite or street-level view for a more realistic context of a pickup site.
